About Us

!K – About us

We’re a family run enterprise exercising our love for creating things and inflicting these creations on friends and acquaintances from our smallholding on the Blaauklippen River in Jamestown, outside Stellenbosch.

We bake things – food and pottery. We ferment anything – vegetables, proteins & grains. We grow things – to eat, to admire, to share.

In doing these things, we claim for ourselves the freedom to explore and break rules, especially those of convention. Lofty ideals we have, but then we also need to dream. And very often we burn our fingers!

We’ve been baking sourdough breads for some 15 years now, acquiring more and new expertise, developing new formulas and being humbled in the effort. We’ve baked lots of bread, given away lots of bread and recently we thought of selling lots of bread. Well, as much as it is fun to make. Let the other pages of this website elaborate.

We have recently begun to explore the inclusion of other varied and seemingly unrelated confectionaries such as sourdough croissants, kouign-amanns, cruffins, New England cookies, brownies – and now exploring savouries such as samoosas and salomies!

And for more fun, we grow vegetables, ferment vegetables and generally make our garden grow.

And then we play with clay as well … so maybe we’re now a little bit more than a bakery that many of you know us as.

Our sales model is very simple and has been adapted to the style of our operation and tailored to our capacity. We therefore have a limited number of customers, mostly friends and if not friends, then friends of friends.

At the beginning of every week we select a number of breads from our repertoire and make these available for ordering. Ordering currently takes place via a Whatsapp group and we have very recently activated the online ordering and payment feature on the website. We’re also looking to have a presence at one of the weekend markets in and around Stellenbosch – or Somerset West.

Deliveries take place at two venues on Saturday morning in and outside Stellenbosch.

That’s about it.

Oh yes – and we love to do commissions, either from our repertoire or some new exploration.

The flours we purchase are all stoneground, unbleached and gmo-free. They are not chemically enriched nor enhanced in any way. We mill all our wholemeal wheat and wholemeal rye flours in-house except for the whites – wheat, rye, spelt, oats & barley. We use ingredients that are of a high quality and use these in quantities as demanded by our formulas, regardless of cost. We take an approach that if the consequent price of the bread proves to be excessive, then we would choose not to make the bread part of our offering.

So where would we like this all to go?  Not sure, but wouldn’t it be nice if the little enclave of Jamestown, could become a hive of home industry and strengthen itself as a village full of character, strong sense of community – a place which would draw surrounding communities to partake of the environment and all the goods on offer!
